Asperger's Syndrome in Adults - Aspergers Symptoms

Asperger Syndrome an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or neurobiological disorder. Asperger syndrome main symptom is difficulties in social situations. This syndrome differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development.

Asperger syndrome is also called Asperger's syndrome named for a Viennese physician, Hans Asperger, who in 1944 published a paper which described a pattern of behaviors in several young boys who lacked nonverbal communication skills, demonstrated limited empathy with their peers, and were physically clumsy.

Most symptoms persist through the teen years. Some adults have Asperger's syndrome. While every person who has the syndrome will experience different symptoms and severity of symptoms.

The Typical adult symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome:

  • Average or above average intelligence.
  • Unable to read body language.
  • Specialized fields of interest or hobbies.
  • Inability to think in abstract ways.
  • Difficulties in empathizing with other people.
  • Problems with controlling feelings such as anger, depression and anxiety.
  • Problems with understanding another person's feeling.
  • Hampered conversational ability.
  • Does not pick up on subtle social cues.
  • Unable to "get" jokes, metaphors and figurative language.
